The Affair Begins

“You bitch.”

It was the last thing that my husband had said to me before heading to bed that night. I ended up sleeping on the couch. He was so angry at me for spying on him and ruining his magical moment with Brittany, I truly believed that I was the one who should feel guilty for his affair.

I tossed and turned, trying to figure out how I would apologize to Alex for not trusting him, for spying on him, for catching him with another woman. I felt pathetic. We would have both been so much happier if I had just let him cheat with Brittany without needing to know exactly what was happening between them.

What was wrong with me? I had already been positioned as the “inferior woman” in this scenario: the jealous, plain wife who dared to show up at her husband’s office uninvited and received nothing but cold glances from his coworkers. I should have held my head high and pretended that I didn’t suspect Brittany wanted Alex so badly. If only I had been a little less annoyed when Alex had told me that he was ditching our Saturday night plans for a concert with a beautiful, surgically-enhanced, younger woman.

Instead, I had let my emotions take over. I couldn’t hide the fact that I was jealous of Brittany, and that I didn’t trust her around Alex. I would be so much happier right now if I had taken a sleeping pill last night instead of waiting for my husband to come home.

Deep down, I believed that Alex’s affair was my fault. I wasn’t hot enough. I wasn’t sexually adventurous enough. Never mind the fact that he’d never even looked at another woman before Brittany entered the picture — I couldn’t stop obsessing over the idea that if it wasn’t Brittany, it would have been someone else.

I had no idea what I would say to Alex tomorrow. All I knew for sure was that I hated myself tonight.
